O austríaco Robert Musil (Klagenfurt, 1880 – Genebra, 1942) teve sua obra proscrita pelo nazismo. Formalmente era pouco palatável e ousou nos temas. Seu primeiro romance, “O Jovem Törless”, evidenciou o nascimento de um pensador que fazia uso da ficção para tratar de questões impactantes. Esta obra é sobre a natureza do desejo sexual e suas relações com a moral e a ética. O protagonista ocupa-se de investigar intelectualmente sua atração por um colega de internato, além de mergulhar efetivamente em atos consonantes com ela e transforma-la em vivência. Seu objeto (transitório) de desejo é um adolescente que, por ter sido apanhando furtando vê-se obrigado à submissão a dois outros jovens, satisfazendo seus apetites sádicos e sustentando um pretexto para que eles deem vazão a impulsos homossexuais. Törless pretende compreensões objetivas e inequívocas sobre o erotismo. Contrasta-o com sentidos para o comportamento “adequado” ou “natural”. Tenta em vão servir-se da matemática, quando é ensinado sobre o uso dos números imaginários. Logo percebe a limitação quanto ao que se pode imaginar e significar. Também não encontra clareza em preceitos morais. É instável em relação a valores. Descobre que não é possível subjugar forças profundamente rebeldes à razão e, especialmente, que é fútil justifica-las. Aceita-as no que concerne ao sexo, sem que torne-se praticante exclusivo do que experimenta. Não estabelece fidelidades. Acaba por rejeitar recursos violentos e opressores de instrumentalização do outro. Vê nisto a pusilanimidade do homem. Aceita ser o que é, pelo que é. Dispensa as camuflagens. Torna-se corajoso e humilde diante do que o constitui e o define como humano. Abandona os falsos papeis de isenção, assim como de poder e as crenças em amplas extensões da livre escolha. Respeita a dimensão do que não pode conhecer e nem dominar e que faz parte dele. Nisto consiste sua iniciação ética.

His first novel, The Young Törless, already revealed the emergence of a thinker who employed fiction to confront disturbing and consequential questions. The novel addresses the nature of sexual desire and its relationship to morality and ethics.
The protagonist devotes himself to an intellectual investigation of his attraction to a fellow boarding-school student, while also immersing himself in acts consonant with that attraction, transforming it into lived experience. The (transitory) object of his desire is an adolescent who, after being caught stealing, is forced into submission by two other boys, compelled to satisfy their sadistic appetites and to provide a pretext for the release of their homosexual impulses.
Törless seeks objective and unequivocal understandings of eroticism. He contrasts it with prevailing notions of “appropriate” or “natural” behavior. In vain, he attempts to enlist mathematics to this end when he is introduced to the concept of imaginary numbers. He soon perceives the limits of what can be imagined and meaningfully grasped. Nor does he find clarity in moral precepts. His relation to values is unstable. He discovers that it is impossible to subdue forces profoundly resistant to reason and, above all, that attempting to justify them is futile.
He accepts these forces insofar as they concern sexuality, without becoming an exclusive practitioner of what he experiences. He establishes no fidelities. He ultimately rejects violent and oppressive means of instrumentalizing others, recognizing in them the pusillanimity of human beings. He accepts himself for what he is, as he is. He dispenses with camouflage. He becomes courageous and humble before that which constitutes and defines him as human. He abandons false postures of neutrality, as well as illusions of power and beliefs in broad domains of free choice. He respects the dimension of what he cannot know or control and which nonetheless belongs to him. In this lies his ethical initiation.
