APARIÇÃO

Vergílio Ferreira (Gouveia, 1916-Lisboa, 1996) foi um grande escritor português. Pouco conhecido no Brasil. Merece que o leiamos e que o mundo literário não se furte a reconhecer sua importância. Provavelmente seu romance mais famoso seja “Aparição”, de 1959. Sofisticado, trata preponderantemente de ideias. A narrativa é construída em torno do conceito de “fenômeno”, oriundo do pensamento de Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) e dos acréscimos de Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). Aproximadamente, fenômeno aqui significa a revelação para a consciência, daquilo que há de mais essencial num objeto. O que definiria o objeto em si. E, não se trata de revelação enquanto construto discursivo teórico, mas de uma vivência radical, cuja essência está despida das qualificações, especificidades e particularidades prévias. De certo modo, é uma maneira de pensar sobre a vida ou de revelar parte de suas dimensões, que evita as explicações metafísicas e valoriza a vivência humana. Prioriza aquilo que é passível de ser experimentado diretamente e não tecido de modo indireto e para além do sensível.  Esta vertente da filosofia teve grande influência sobre pensadores do século XX. Modelou concepções de mundo. Em “Aparição” há um narrador, Alberto, a quem interessa tratar do impacto que lhe causa o vislumbre do Ser no sujeito que ele é e, quase como decorrência, da apreensão (imperfeita) da natureza da vida. Também explora a constatação da morte enquanto o limite extremo do que é vivo, seu desaparecimento. Morte que não deixa de produzir margens balizadoras para o Ser. Na estória, que se passa quase sempre em Évora, os personagens não têm força dramática própria. Prestam-se antes para falar sobre as posições que o homem pode assumir diante do que estamos denominando fenômeno, da profundidade com que o experimenta, da capacidade de sobreviver ao trauma de ser invadido por algo sobre o que qualquer discurso é falho, insuficiente e tendente à precariedade. Aborda o risco da cegueira dos indivíduos sobre si mesmos e sobre o mundo em que estão inseridos. Alguns podem consoar com a revelação, aparição ou fenômeno e buscar um gozo possível, assumir a humildade libertadora. Outros ficam aprisionados à angústia da consciência de se ser o que não foi criado deliberadamente (por si mesmo ou por outrem), de ser algo que não se pode antecipar, que não se pode conhecer intelectualmente com suficiência. O Ser não é fruto de um projeto. Não cabe em nenhuma psicologia.  A constatação de ser se dá como aparição. Fenômeno. A obra tem o mérito de vencer o didatismo. O efeito lírico surge de um linguajar de que só os portugueses são capazes. Fica o travo da dor autêntica de quem precisou disso tratar para alcançar alguma serenidade. Talvez harmonia. Uma leitura para alimentar o espírito (o Ser?). Utilizável como um bálsamo para a experiência do trágico (na concepção grega). Vergílio Ferreira (Gouveia, 1916 – Lisbon, 1996) was a major Portuguese writer, though little known in Brazil. He deserves to be read, and the literary world ought not to shy away from recognizing his importance. His most renowned novel is likely Aparição, published in 1959. Sophisticated and predominantly concerned with ideas, the narrative is built around the concept of the phenomenon, drawn from the thought of Edmund Husserl (1859–1938) and enriched by Martin Heidegger (1889–1976). Roughly speaking, phenomenon here signifies the revelation to consciousness of that which is most essential in an object—what would define the object in itself. And it is not a revelation conceived as a theoretical or discursive construct, but a radical lived experience, whose essence stands stripped of prior qualifications, specificities, and particularities. In a certain way, it is a mode of thinking about life, or of unveiling part of its dimensions, that avoids metaphysical explanations and values human experience. It privileges that which can be directly lived rather than indirectly woven beyond the sensible. This branch of philosophy exerted great influence on thinkers of the twentieth century and shaped entire conceptions of the world.

In Aparição, the narrator, Alberto, is concerned with the impact produced in him by the sudden glimpse of Being within the subject that he is and, almost consequentially, by the (imperfect) apprehension of the nature of life. He also explores the realization of death as the extreme limit of what is alive—its disappearance. Death, which nonetheless delineates the boundaries of Being. In the story, which takes place mostly in Évora, the characters possess no dramatic force of their own; they serve instead as instruments through which to reflect upon the stances a human being may assume before what we are calling the phenomenon—upon the depth with which one experiences it and the capacity to survive the trauma of being invaded by something about which any discourse is flawed, insufficient, and doomed to inadequacy. The novel addresses the peril of blindness—of individuals toward themselves and toward the world in which they are embedded.

Some may attune themselves to the revelation, apparition, or phenomenon and seek whatever form of possible delight it affords, embracing a liberating humility. Others remain imprisoned in the anguish of knowing themselves to be something not deliberately created (neither by oneself nor by others), something that cannot be anticipated or fully comprehended through intellect alone. Being is not the product of a project. It fits within no psychology. The realization of being occurs as an apparition—a phenomenon.

The work has the merit of rising above didacticism. Its lyrical effect emerges from a mode of expression of which only the Portuguese seem capable. One is left with the aftertaste of authentic pain—of someone who needed to confront such matters in order to achieve a measure of serenity, perhaps even harmony. A reading that nourishes the spirit (the Being?). Something one might use as a balm for the experience of the tragic—Greek in its conception.
