AMOR INSENSATO

Junichiro Tanizaki (Tóquio, 1886 – Kanagawa, 1965) teve seu período mais produtivo no início do século 20. Escreveu sobre amor, desejo e falência da racionalidade na vigência da paixão. E também falou brilhantemente sobre estética.

No romance “Amor Insensato” ele conta a estória de um homem adulto e vivendo em conforto quanto a recursos materiais que se apaixona por uma adolescente pobre, vendo quase que exclusivamente a semelhança dela com uma atriz de cinema americana. Ele aproxima-se da família dela e faz um acordo pelo qual passa a cuidar da moça, levando-a para sua casa. No intuito de torna-la uma mulher educada e adequada a tornar-se seu par ele tenta muda-la, mas depara-se com irremediáveis assimetrias e incompatibilidades entre ambos. No que são e no que pretendem há incongruências tão importantes que impedem qualquer forma de comunhão. Tornam-se mais estranhos um ao outro quanto mais convivem. Isso acaba por inviabilizar a relação amorosa que ele fantasiara.

Com a ideia inicial de que é senhor na relação entre ambos e que está no comando da realização de um projeto, ele vai aos poucos se apercebendo de sua submissão à jovem mulher, que não cede às demandas dele, sem o dizer ou demonstrar abertamente. O desejo e o exercício da sensualidade passam a ser cada vez mais onerosos para ele. Ela desfruta da relativa riqueza dele buscando outros homens e excluindo-o de seu mundo de prazeres. O comportamento cínico da jovem leva-o ao completo descontrole e desespero.

Além desse plano narrativo, muito bem urdido e de cunho mais particular, há uma sofisticada abordagem de problemas causados por modificações que ocorriam na sociedade japonesa do princípio do século XX no sentido de um certo tipo de ocidentalização. A cultura do outro lado do mundo seduzia e assustava, ameaçando a deterioração de uma identidade nacional fincada na estrita tradição milenar, que abrangia múltiplos aspectos da vida. Isso funciona ora como “pano de fundo” e ora como tema central do romance. Devido a atração quase irresistível pela estética e valores do Ocidente e o afastamento do modo de proceder característico de seu mundo nativo o personagem principal enreda-se em teias que o transformam num ser erradio e inseguro quanto a quem seria realmente, o que poderia ter de novo e também o que estaria perdendo. Cenário e trama vão servindo a propósitos comuns.

A construção do texto é muito elegante. Um exemplo de precisão oriental. O que contribui para aumentar o prazer na degustação da leitura.

Junichiro Tanizaki (Tokyo, 1886 – Kanagawa, 1965) experienced his most productive period at the beginning of the twentieth century. He wrote about love, desire, and the collapse of rationality under the sway of passion. He also spoke brilliantly about aesthetics.

In the novel Naomi (Foolish Love), he tells the story of an adult man, living in material comfort, who falls in love with a poor adolescent girl, seeing her almost exclusively through her resemblance to an American film actress. He draws close to her family and enters into an arrangement by which he takes responsibility for the young woman, bringing her into his home. With the intention of turning her into a cultivated woman suited to become his partner, he attempts to reshape her, only to encounter irremediable asymmetries and incompatibilities between them. In what they are and in what they desire, there are incongruities so profound that any form of communion becomes impossible. The more they live together, the more alien they become to one another. This ultimately renders unviable the love relationship he had fantasized.

Initially convinced that he is the master of the relationship and that he controls the execution of a project of his own making, he gradually comes to realize his submission to the young woman, who never yields to his demands, though without openly stating or demonstrating this resistance. Desire and the exercise of sensuality grow increasingly costly for him. She enjoys his relative wealth while seeking out other men and excluding him from her world of pleasures. The young woman’s cynical behavior drives him into complete loss of control and despair.

Beyond this narrative plane—finely woven and more intimate in scope—there is a sophisticated treatment of the problems brought about by the transformations occurring in Japanese society at the dawn of the twentieth century, particularly in the direction of a certain form of Westernization. The culture of the other side of the world both fascinated and frightened, threatening the deterioration of a national identity rooted in a strict, millennia-old tradition encompassing multiple aspects of life. At times this functions as background, at others as the central theme of the novel. Owing to his nearly irresistible attraction to Western aesthetics and values, and his distancing from the modes of conduct characteristic of his native world, the protagonist becomes entangled in webs that turn him into a drifting, insecure being, uncertain of who he truly is, of what he might gain from the new, and of what he may be losing. Setting and plot thus serve convergent purposes.

The construction of the text is exceedingly elegant—an example of Eastern precision—which only heightens the pleasure of reading.
