ANTES E DEPOIS (Prima e Dopo) – ALBA DE CÉSPEDES

BEFORE AND AFTER

There are people who devote themselves to changing certain mechanisms by which the world is ordered. Their purposes are many. Some seek to reshape society; others, the course of individual lives. New paths are traced, new ways of living conceived. Beliefs and values become guiding lights, whether embraced through allegiance to those one trusts or forged through personal conviction. Much may spring from this. Yet rigid adherence to beliefs and values often clouds the perception of reality, restricting one’s capacity to weigh both what is desired and what is truly attainable. Those endowed with greater confidence and courage are able to reflect more broadly, revising their purposes and actions as life unfolds. By contrast, those who make their struggles the very foundation of their identity tend to resist change, hardening around their earliest convictions with little genuine commitment to truth.

Published in 1955, BEFORE AND AFTER, by ALBA DE CÉSPEDES (Rome, 1911 – Paris, 1997), explores these questions through the inner life of a woman.

The novella’s protagonist is Irene, a woman in her thirties who has renounced the privileges of wealth and social standing afforded by her family. She has also broken off her engagement to the well-established Maurizio, the man she was expected to marry. Irene feared becoming imprisoned within a way of life she found unbearable. Instead, she became a journalist, surrounded herself with friends who were her intellectual equals, and entered into a relationship with Pietro, a man who seemed capable of preserving the integrity and independence of both partners. Ideas provide the tuning fork for the lives Irene, her friends, and her lover choose to lead.

She remains at peace with her decisions until she hires Erminia, a simple young woman from a small village in rural Italy, as her housekeeper. Erminia admires precisely the world of comfort and opportunity that Irene had rejected. After growing closer to her employer, however, she resigns, unable to reconcile herself with Irene’s unconventional way of life.

What Irene perceives in Erminia after the young woman returns to her former position—where she is poorly treated by a mistress whom she nevertheless admires—deeply unsettles her. It robs her of certainties. The principles upon which she has built her existence begin to lose their force, and she feels a quiet nostalgia for what she abandoned when she chose another path. The meanings of the convictions that had sustained her independence are subtly reexamined. Something within her begins to empty. Her gaze changes. At the same time, Pietro surprises her with attitudes she had never imagined compatible with the man she believed him to be. Elements of reality, stubbornly resistant to idealization, overturn Irene’s convictions and test her steadfastness.

Alba de Céspedes wrote other novels that challenged the social imperatives through which women were subordinated. She created heroines who discovered new ways of thinking and living, rejecting convention and becoming stronger, more self-possessed women, capable of shaping their own destinies. In this novel, however, she emphasizes something equally essential: the courage required to reconsider one’s guiding beliefs and to confront aspects of reality that had previously remained unseen. Such realities are often excluded from view by those whose hidden fears drive them toward rigid activism or ideological certainty.

As if adding a further note to the ideas expressed in her earlier works, de Céspedes reflects upon the insufficiency of even the noblest intentions and the most carefully imagined projects. She does not repudiate what she had previously affirmed. She does not diminish the necessity of women occupying the same spaces as men—without submission, without confinement to lesser roles, without accepting comforts purchased at the price of intellectual and moral autonomy. Rather, she refines those earlier convictions, tempering them with a deeper awareness of life’s complexity. Such refinement, too, demands courage.

Far more than an advocate for women’s rightful place in society—though she unquestionably was one—Alba de Céspedes was a writer profoundly engaged with the complexities of the human condition.
