A harmonia é engenhosa.
Each person’s perception of the world is profoundly different, and this diversity often lends complexity to human relationships, even when it may not be immediately apparent. Everyone navigates by their own interpretations, seeking above all to satisfy their own needs and retreating into a private realm. Questioning what one believes is less common than seeking refuge in confirmation. More often than not, what one person takes to be real lies far removed from another’s reality, and from a reality grounded in facts and evidence. Human interactions are governed predominantly by the particularities of those involved, rather than by any genuine effort to understand one another or engage in meaningful dialogue. There is a kind of game, full of mysteries, in which everyone is a player. Within this intricate web, what might be called happiness is almost a myth, given the many impossibilities that undermine interpersonal relationships. It is no easy matter to move beyond superficial understandings of these questions. YASMINA REZA (Paris, 1959) does so with remarkable talent in HAPPY THE HAPPY.
The book consists of twenty-one chapters, each of which could also be read as a short story without losing its meaning. Yet this is not a collection of stories. The chapters are interconnected both through their characters—who take center stage in some and appear in passing in others—and, above all, through the way they work in concert, conveying different facets of the same underlying themes. The harmony is ingeniously achieved. Everything is coherent: the characters, what they make of their lives, and what life makes of them. Only someone with an exceptional literary gift could have written such a work. Yasmina Reza is truly admirable.
Set in twenty-first-century France, the novel could just as easily unfold in many other places. Its fictional characters are diverse in age, profession, interests, social standing, emotional relationships, and sexuality. Yet, despite their differences and the various ways in which they seek to manage their lives, they seem bound together by the challenges that unsettle them and frustrate their purposes and ideals. The limitations imposed upon them compromise their well-being and happiness. Dissatisfaction, frustration, disappointment, difficulties in establishing a sense of identity, and loneliness are the psychological states that bring them together. Equally significant is their disillusionment with their ability to control their own destinies, which remain subject to the dictates of chance and to forces unknown within the universe they inhabit. Many of the desires and sufferings that seem distinctly contemporary may, in fact, be attributed to the human condition itself, across different eras and geographies, even when they bear the imprint of their own time.
The stories are woven around love, friendship, eroticism, and family bonds. They are brief, yet charged with intensity. Within them, the dramatic ultimately reveals elements of the tragic. There is subtle humor, too. The emotions and patterns of thought portrayed are what shape relationships between people, while also determining the isolation they so deeply wish to escape. A work of fiction that rings profoundly true.
