Camuflou os mais autênticos sentimentos amorosos, ainda que se gozasse o prêmio de ter e amar duas filhas de personalidades complexas e ser parte de uma família. Sua perspicácia e disposição para a pândega dão muita graça ao livro e afirmam a existência de antídotos para banalizações travestidas em clichês que obscurecem os entendimentos e empobrecem as vivências. Apesar de ele ser o condutor do romance, de estar mais próximo do leitor, outros personagens, como Morris, Carmel, a esposa, as filhas Donna e Maxine e as amigas de Carmel, também originárias de Antígua, são bastante interessantes no jogo armado pela autora.

BERNARDINE EVARISTO trata com vigor e criatividade bem-humorada de problemas sérios, que costumam agrilhoar os humanos de qualquer época e lugar, mesmo que com diferenças de moldes. A intolerância ao que é diverso transita por questões de raça (mais frequentemente cor da pele), nacionalidade, papéis de gênero, orientação sexual, elementos culturais e de direito à singularidade, passando por insuspeitadas frestas daquilo que constitui a civilidade em indivíduos e sociedades. Ela sabe descartar trivialidades abrindo caminho para o que é essencial e nem sempre parece.
